Safety & Safeguarding

On-Water Protocols & Athlete Welfare

1. On-Water Safety Protocols

Safety on Lough Derg is paramount. Derg Rowing Club operates strictly within the safety rules established by Rowing Ireland and World Rowing.

  • Electric Safety Launches: All water sessions are accompanied by dedicated safety launches equipped with emergency lines, first aid kits, thermal blankets, and VHF communications.
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): All PR1 and PR2 rowers and all junior participants wear certified, low-profile PFDs fitted with rapid-release mechanisms.
  • Stabilising Pontoons: All single and double sculls used by beginner or PR1 athletes are fitted with certified pontoon floats that prevent capsize.
  • Heel Restraints: Every shell is inspected prior to launch to ensure foot stretchers possess instant, single-pull heel releases.

2. Child & Vulnerable Adult Safeguarding

Derg Rowing Club is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for young people and vulnerable adults. Our Designated Children's Officer (DCO) and Club Children's Officer oversee the implementation of our Code of Ethics and Good Practice in Children's Sport.

All coaches, launch drivers, and shore helpers undergo mandatory Garda vetting and Sport Ireland safeguarding training before working with athletes.

3. Weather & Water Assessment

Coaches conduct thorough risk assessments prior to every session. Training is modified, held in sheltered bays, or transitioned to indoor conditioning in the event of high winds (above Beaufort force 3 for para sculling), electrical storms, or reduced visibility.
